Polypropylene use in PPE

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is in huge demand globally and is a key resource in protection from, and prevention of, COVID-19. PPE refers to any protective clothing, helmets, goggles or face masks that protect the wearer’s body from injury or infection.

Polypropylene (PP) is used in the manufacturing of PPE face masks and here at International Fibres Group (IFG) we have been producing and exporting PP for PPE production across the globe from our European sites.

PP Fine Fibre is used in this production as a non-woven, needle punched fabric. The choice of this material is made due to the inherent and durable electrostatic charge of the PP fibre which traps particles effectively, protecting the wearer from infection.

IFG has shipped more than 200 tonnes of PP for PPE use since March 2020 around the globe including to North America and Australasia. Although not all the 200 tonnes of exports have directly been produced into PPE, many of our clients are making the switch to face mask production as the demand for filtration products has increased globally – but if it had, this would equate to 40 million masks!
